KIU Holds the Inauguration of the VII All-Russian Design Olympiad in Honor of A.M. Rodchenko
Kazan Innovation University, named after V.G. Timiryasova, held the grand opening of the VII All-Russian Design Olympiad named after Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko. This Olympiad, organized by the Department of Design at KIU with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, has been an annual event at the university for several years and has become an important occasion in the realm of art and design education. It unites talented students and schoolchildren from various regions of Russia, fostering an environment for creative growth, professional orientation, and the sharing of experiences. This year, the Olympiad coincides with the announcement of the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and the Year of Military and Labor Valor. The Olympiad acts as a unifying event, gathering young talents from cities such as Kazan, Moscow, Saratov, Volgograd, Nizhnekamsk, Ufa, among others. Approximately 200 participants submitted their works for jury evaluation, and as a result of the selection process, the finest were invited to Kazan for the in-person stage.
The opening ceremony was led by the First Vice-Rector of Kazan Innovation University, Doctor of Law, Professor, and Honored Lawyer of the Republic of Tatarstan, Igor Bikeev. In his welcoming remarks, he highlighted the importance of the Olympiad as a venue for tapping into the creative potential of youth and noted the university's commitment to fostering conditions for each student’s development: "Design is a unique art form, combining science and personal expression. I am truly pleased that we are launching another Olympiad today; every year, we gather to recognize excellence. In the days ahead, we will be treated to many remarkable creations! I send you the warmest regards from the Rector of Kazan Innovation University, Asia Timiryasova, who greatly values this Olympiad and always supports you. May extraordinary works emerge, and may everyone showcase their talents to become great designers and artists. I believe in this outcome!"
The Head of the Professional Education Department of the Republic of Tatarstan, Andrey Fedorov, also addressed the participants: "It is heartening that KIU is involved in all state initiatives and programs. It is a pleasure to see such a large turnout of children and youth at this event. The true value of Olympiads, gatherings, competitions, and grants lies in the communication they facilitate. I hope these days are fruitful for you, filled with new learnings and friendships. Ultimately, everyone will gain valuable experiences. I genuinely believe the Olympiad will continue for many years to come! I wish you all success, good fortune, and beautiful creations for the awards ceremony!"
A welcoming address was also delivered by Vladimir Rodchenko, a descendant of Alexander Rodchenko, who shared personal anecdotes about the esteemed artist and his impact on the art world: "Rodchenko's name has brought glory to Kazan, all of Russia, and the Soviet Union. I want to emphasize the critical role of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s in shaping art." Dina Akhmetova, Chief Researcher and Curator of Exhibition Activities at the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, illuminated the significance of Rodchenko's journey for contemporary art: "Since the 1990s, I have immersed myself deeply in Alexander Rodchenko's work. I take great pride in the fact that he studied right here, receiving his artistic education in Kazan. It is essential to recognize that Rodchenko was an ordinary individual — much like many of you today. His path was not preordained; it was during his youth in Kazan that he decided to become an artist and designer, gaining a diverse set of skills and knowledge. Therefore, I encourage you to set ambitious goals for yourself and to diligently pursue them, just as Rodchenko did a century ago."
Design blogger, brand ambassador, and member of the Union of Designers of Russia, Dina Shaydullina, also spoke to the participants: "I wish all Olympiad participants to be bold in their creations!"
The ceremony paid special tribute to Alexander Rodchenko’s historical legacy, reminding attendees that nearly a century ago — on April 17, 1925 — he designed the interior for the Workers' Club at the Soviet Pavilion during the World Exhibition in Paris, a project that marked a significant milestone in both art and science and solidified Rodchenko’s position as a pioneer of modern design.
After the official proceedings, students from Kazan Innovation University showcased a creative performance for the participants, concluding the opening ceremony with an inspiring atmosphere for the upcoming competition days. Following this, participants took commemorative photos and toured the university's main building, further familiarizing themselves with the educational and creative environment at KIU. Ahead lie competition challenges, collaborations with experts, new friendships
