KIU Welcomes the Inauguration of the VII All-Russian Design Olympiad Honoring A.M. Rodchenko

      Kazan Innovation University, named after V.G. Timiryasova, held the grand opening of the VII All-Russian Design Olympiad dedicated to Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko. Organized by the KIU Department of Design with the backing of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, this Olympiad has been a recurring event at the university for several years and has become an important occasion in the realm of art and design education. It unites gifted schoolchildren and students from various regions of Russia, providing a platform for creative growth, professional self-discovery, and experience sharing. This year, the event coincides with the declaration of the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and the Year of Military and Labor Valor. It acts as a means of unification, gathering young talents from cities such as Kazan, Moscow, Saratov, Volgograd, Nizhnekamsk, Ufa, and others. Around 200 participants submitted their works for jury evaluation, and from those selected, the top entries were invited to Kazan for the in-person round.

      The First Vice-Rector of Kazan Innovation University, Doctor of Law, Professor, and Honored Lawyer of the Republic of Tatarstan Igor Bikeev inaugurated the opening ceremony. In his welcoming address, he highlighted the Olympiad's importance as a platform for unlocking the creative potential of youth and affirmed the university's commitment to fostering an environment conducive to every student's growth: "Design art is unique; it combines science with self-expression. I am genuinely pleased that we are launching another Olympiad today; every year, we gather to honor the best. Over the next few days, we will witness many remarkable creations! I extend warm greetings from the Rector of Kazan Innovation University, Asia Timiryasova, who has great affection for this Olympiad and is always watching over you and offering assistance. May exceptional works emerge, and may everyone showcase their talents to become outstanding designers and artists. I have faith that this will be the case!"

      Andrey Fedorov, Head of the Professional Education Department of the Republic of Tatarstan, also addressed the participants: "It is heartening to see KIU engaged in all state projects and initiatives. It is wonderful to have so many children and young people at this event. The worth of such Olympiads, gatherings, competitions, and grants lies in the connections formed. I hope these days are filled with richness and productivity for you, that you learn something new, and forge friendships. Consequently, everyone will gain invaluable experience.       A representative of the Rodchenko artistic lineage, the artist's grandnephew Vladimir Rodchenko, also delivered a message to the participants, reflecting on the legacy of the master and his impact on the arts: "Rodchenko’s name brought fame to Kazan, all of Russia, and the Soviet Union. The avant-garde movement of the 1920s played a crucial role in the evolution of art."

      Dina Akhmetova, Chief Researcher and Curator of Exhibition Activities at the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, spoke about the relevance of Rodchenko's journey to the contemporary art world: "Since the 1990s, I have immersed myself in the works of Alexander Rodchenko. I take great pride in the fact that he studied right here, receiving his art education in Kazan. It is essential to recognize that Rodchenko was an ordinary individual—just like many of you today. His path was not preordained; it was in his youth, here in Kazan, that he chose to become an artist and designer, accumulating a diverse skill set. Therefore, I encourage you to set ambitious goals for yourselves, just as Rodchenko did a century ago, and work diligently to achieve them."

      Additionally, design blogger, brand ambassador, and member of the Union of Designers of Russia, Dina Shaydullina, encouraged all participants: "I urge each participant of the Olympiad to create fearlessly and seize opportunities!"

      During the ceremony, special emphasis was placed on the historical contributions of Alexander Rodchenko. Attendees were reminded that nearly 100 years ago, on April 17, 1925, he created and implemented the interior design for the Workers' Club at the Soviet Pavilion during the World Exhibition in Paris. This project marked a pivotal moment in the annals of both art and science, solidifying Rodchenko’s legacy as one of modern design's pioneers.
