"Don't expect an Indian summer": what the weather will be like in autumn and winter 2025 — we find out by signs
dzen.ru
September was always a special time of year for our ancestors — a kind of benchmark by which one could judge not only the coming autumn, but also what kind of winter, early spring and even summer lay ahead. In his book "Folk Omens for Weather and Harvest," author Dmitry Dyakonov collected hundreds of observations passed down from generation to generation. We have selected the most telling ones — they will help you glimpse nature’s future.
What September can tell us: nature as a predictor
In September you should watch not only the sky and the thermometer. Plants, birds, mushrooms and forest berries all matter. For example, by the number of nuts and mushrooms already at the beginning of the month one can draw conclusions about the winter: many nuts — it will be cold and snowy; few mushrooms — expect harsh frosts again. Birches also give clues:
— leaves yellowing from the top — spring will come early;
— leaves yellowing from the bottom — spring will be delayed;
— many cones on conifers — the winter will be cold;
— cones low on the spruce — early frosts are coming;
— cones high on the tree — the winter will be short, but may be severe.
Berry bushes are another natural indicator: abundant rowan promises a rainy autumn and a frosty winter. If berries like guelder-rose, rowan, or elderberry ripen earlier than usual, the winter will be especially snowy and prolonged.
The first week of September — key: omens by day
Each day at the start of September has its own symbolism and can tell a lot about upcoming weather scenarios.
September 1
The main “barometer” of autumn. Whatever the weather is on this day — that’s how the whole autumn will be. Spiderwebs lying on the grass and bushes — clear and warm months ahead.
September 2
If there is a lot of rowan — prepare for rain. A wet autumn is almost guaranteed.
September 3
A sunny day — the warmth will last until the end of the month. If the birch is yellowing from the bottom — an extended Indian summer is coming. If leaf fall begins — cooling is not imminent.
September 4
Sun — a mild autumn. Few mushrooms — the winter will be harsh.
September 5
If cranes fly away on this day — the first frosts are near.
September 6
Rainy weather predicts a dry autumn and a bountiful harvest next year.
September 7
Many mushrooms — the winter will be prolonged and severe.
What mid-September tells us
Autumn Andrian
The appearance of a large number of rowan berries — a sign of a frosty winter. Thunder — a sign of a warm autumn. If the morning is cold — winter will come early. Many honey mushrooms in the forest — do not expect a warm Indian summer.
September 11
Starlings that remain in the country — a sign that warm days will continue. However, if there is no precipitation, autumn may turn out damp in the second half.
Red sunset in mid-month
Indicates an impending cold snap. Often the first frosts follow such sunsets.
September 19 — the day that determines the winter
According to the folk calendar, this is Mikhail’s Miracle day. It is rich in weather omens:
— warm weather on this day indicates a prolonged autumn;
— morning frost — abundant snowfalls in winter;
— a birch still bearing leaves — a frosty winter ahead;
— if the cherry tree still has foliage — even with the first snowfall it will not last long.
End of September — winter draws nearer
September 22
The appearance of mosquitoes — a harbinger of a mild winter.
September 25
If there are many snakes in the forest — the winter will be severe with frequent blizzards.
September 27
Morning frosts — the winter is near. A sharp cold snap — an early spring. A northerly wind on this day — a hot summer ahead.
September 30
Rain — an early spring, while clear sky and dry weather — a long, snowy and cold winter.
How much can you trust the omens?
Folk omens are part of cultural heritage formed by many years of observation. They do not replace scientific forecasts, but are often confirmed in practice. If you watch nature carefully, you can notice repetitions from year to year. In this sense September is especially illustrative. It is like a mirror of the coming seasons. Attention to detail, a little patience and an interest in nature — and you can make your own forecast.
