      Biologist Gabdulkhay Samigullin told Chelny News in an interview how to properly harvest and store pumpkins so they stay fresh until spring. Pumpkins should be harvested in late September or early October, determining ripeness by the firmness of the rind. To do this, simply press the fruit lightly with a fingernail — if a mark remains, the pumpkin is not yet ready. It is recommended to cut the harvest with a sharp knife, avoiding twisting off the stem to prevent damage. It's better not to carry the pumpkin by the stem to avoid it breaking off and allowing fungi to enter. Before storage, the pumpkin should be carefully cleaned of dirt using a dry soft cloth and dried in the sun or in a well-ventilated room for a week, without washing the fruit. Damaged or slightly frostbitten pumpkins are better used immediately or frozen, which allows them to retain their beneficial properties for up to 10 months.
