Residents of Tatarstan have begun to travel abroad more often.
This summer 9% more of our compatriots traveled abroad than last year. Interest in African and Asian countries rose significantly — by 38% and 37% respectively. At the same time, Turkey remains the most popular country — both for vacations and for transit connections. These conclusions were reached by MegaFon analysts after studying anonymized subscriber data.
Residents of Tatarstan showed an even more impressive dynamic: over the three summer months they traveled 15% more often than a year earlier. The most popular destinations were Turkey, Abkhazia and Kazakhstan. There was especially noticeable growth in interest in Asia: the number of trips there increased by 87%. Among Asian countries, tourists from the republic are most attracted to China, Vietnam and Thailand.
Overall, among Russians, in addition to Turkey, the expected popular destinations were Belarus, Kazakhstan, Abkhazia and Georgia. Asian countries showed substantial growth in tourist flows, especially Vietnam (+282% compared with last summer), which is also in the top three together with China and Thailand. In Africa the absolute leader is Egypt; Morocco and Tunisia are also in the top ranks, with Tunisia showing the largest increase in the number of trips (+249%). In the Middle East, in addition to Turkey, the top three included the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while there is growth in destinations atypical for Russians: Bahrain (+32%), Iraq (+24%).
Turkey, besides being the main country for Russians’ vacations, is also the most popular place for transit flights: the number of transfers there increased by almost a third. Istanbul has predictably become the key hub for Russians. Kazakhstan ranks second among countries for transfers, but most routes through the republic from the Russian Federation to other countries are by land rather than by air. China is in third place: compared with last summer, transfers there increased by more than 20%. Transit via the UAE remains popular: the country ranks fourth for transfers, their number growing by 10%. Serbia confidently holds a top-five position for transfers, but the number of transit trips through the country’s capital, Belgrade, fell by 8.5% compared to 2024.
Qatar is rapidly losing popularity as a transit hub for Russians: the number of transfers there has decreased threefold. Transit through other Middle Eastern countries, such as Kuwait and Jordan, is also down by 28%.
Russians’ vacations abroad have become shorter, but they are flying more often. If in the summer of 2024 a vacation lasted an average of 10 days, this summer it was 7. At the same time, the number of trips per traveler increased by 6% this summer.
