      The French automaker Renault received a preliminary refusal from Rospatent to register the Reno trademark in Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti after examining the WIPO International Bureau database. The company has a few weeks to respond to the examination notice, otherwise it faces a final refusal.

      Renault filed an application to register the trademark for the sale and manufacture of cars in Russia in October 2024, and in April 2025 received a preliminary refusal. This happened against the backdrop of statements by Renault CEO Luca de Meo in February that the company does not rule out a return to Russia.

      According to Alina Akinshina, CEO of the company Online Patent, Rospatent identified an earlier trademark confusingly similar to the applied-for designation Reno, which was the basis for the preliminary refusal. At the same time, as Akinshina noted, the cited mark belongs to Renault itself, but in the new application the company indicated a different address that does not match the address previously entered in the Russian state registers.

      — To remove this ground for refusal, it is sufficient to amend the entry in the State Register of Trademarks, bring the address into conformity with the current one and inform the examination of this, — Akinshina explained.

      It should be recalled that in May 2022 Renault transferred its stake in AvtoVAZ (67.7%) into state ownership of the Russian Federation in the person of FSUE NAMI with the right to repurchase the stake within six years. The remaining 32.3% of shares, which belonged to Rostec, were also transferred to FSUE NAMI in spring 2023, and in September 2024 the state corporation reclaimed this package using the option to repurchase.
