Onion Day: traditions, omens and unusual autumn celebrations

September 20 in the folk calendar is called Onion Day.

September 20 has long been associated with the end of vegetable harvesting and the preparation of fodder for livestock. In Rus' peasants finished harvesting cabbage and onions, believing that if they did not, the crop would not keep until winter. Onions were not only stored for the winter but also used in rituals: they were braided into plaits and hung in the house for protection against illness and "evil forces." A variety of dishes were made from them, stuffed and baked, and hair was washed with a decoction of onion skins to give it strength and shine.

On this day it was also customary to thank God for the harvest: after the church service people held communal meals where young people gathered for get-togethers and housewives treated guests to dishes made from fresh vegetables.

In Rus' girls used onion skins for divination. The best-known was about marriage. A girl would take several bulbs, write on them the names of lads she liked, and then place them overnight under the stove. In the morning she would look: the bulb that produced the first sprout or became brighter indicated the one she would marry.

There was another way to learn the future: take a handful of dry skins, mix them and randomly pull out three flakes. The color and condition of the skin were interpreted. Light — for joy, reddish — for passion, dark — for obstacles or separation. Sometimes the skins were placed under the pillow to see the future groom in a dream.

      What not to do

      - Lend or borrow: this can lead to financial difficulties and instability.

      - Hold weddings or plan romantic meetings: it is believed that such undertakings will not bring the desired result.

      - Raise your voice at children: this can spoil relationships and leave an emotional mark.

      - Harvest grapes: berries picked on this day spoil quickly and lose their taste.

      - For women to be the last to enter the house: to avoid bringing misfortune, a man should be the last to enter.

      Weather omens

Folk signs on September 20 helped predict the weather for the coming autumn and winter:

🪶 A high flight of cranes foretells a cold autumn.

🌧️ Rain on this day bodes wet weather in the following days.

🌫️ Heavy dew in the morning promises warm and clear weather, and fog — a clear day.

🌬️ Wind from the east predicts warm and dry weather, and from the west — precipitation.

🍃 Birch leaves falling actively — a short autumn and a harsh winter.

🧅 Lots of skins on the bulbs — expect severe frosts in winter.
