Ilsur Metshin has been elected mayor of Kazan for the fifth time.

      Ilsur Metshin has been re-elected mayor of Kazan. The vote took place today in the capital’s town hall. Candidates for the post were selected in a new format — details from Angelina Morozova.

      The first session of the Kazan City Duma of the fifth convocation. The procedure is taking place in a new format. Deputies are taking part in a secret ballot to determine the mayor of Kazan. The contenders are Ilsur Metshin, Roza Gainutdinova from the New People party, and Alexander Komisarov from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF). The majority of votes went to Ilsur Metshin: he was supported by 41 deputies, Roza Gainutdinova received 1 vote, Alexander Komisarov — 4.

      The insignia of office was presented to Ilsur Metshin by the Head of the Administration of the Republic of Tatarstan, Asgat Safarov. He congratulated the mayor on his election on behalf of Rustam Minnikhanov and personally.

      “Thanks to the coordinated work of all branches of power, Kazan has become one of the most comfortable cities to live in not only in Russia but also among leading European cities. Thanks to the large-scale international events of recent years, the city has gained wide recognition around the world. We are grateful to the federal authorities for their attention and support of all our initiatives, personally to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. I note that great attention is also paid to the capital by the Head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Nurgalievich Minnikhanov,” said Asgat Safarov, Head of the Administration of the Republic of Tatarstan.

      Ilsur Metshin took the helm of the capital of Tatarstan in 2005. The mayor of Kazan recalled that moment in his speech.

      “From this podium 20 years ago Mintimer Sharipovich addressed the Kazan City Duma — our first president, our teacher, our mentor. Time seems to have flown by, but considering the distance we have travelled under the leadership of both the first president and the Head of our republic, Rustam Nurgalievich Minnikhanov, and the volume of what has been accomplished, of course I want to express words of gratitude above all to our hard-working residents,” said Ilsur Metshin, mayor of Kazan.

      Over the past 20 years Kazan has repeatedly been at the center of global attention: the city hosted the Summer Universiade, the World Championships in swimming and football, WorldSkills, and large-scale forums. In 2024 Kazan hosted the XVI BRICS Summit. The republic’s capital welcomed world leaders. At the final press conference the head of state called the resulting document the Kazan Declaration and thanked the leadership and the Kazan mayor’s office for their hospitality and comfortable conditions.

      In addition to global events, major changes are taking place in Kazan: the city is being renewed. New residential complexes, schools, hospitals and polyclinics, and sports facilities are being built; parks, squares and public spaces are being reconstructed and opened.

      “They are doing a lot to open new parks that are convenient for children and parents. For everyone!”

      “Things have begun to improve and pick up great momentum. Parks, squares, new places for children’s and youth recreation, sports grounds — for example, a new theater. All this has become very pleasing to residents’ eyes, and an ordinary walk turns into some kind of new excursion and inspires us!”

      “The streets have changed, wooden buildings have disappeared; bridges have been built, roads. Wonderful Kazan is thriving.”
