Folk omens for September 23, 2025: what you can and cannot do on this day
The birthday of chewing gum, the world’s first electric street lamps, the launching of the largest submarine in the world and other events that happened on this day.
September 23 is celebrated as the Day of Peter and Paul Ryabinniks. The name of the holiday is connected not only with the saints but also with the gathering of rowan berries for winter provisions. Berries were dried, made into compote and kvass, tinctures were prepared from them, and their twigs were hung in houses as talismans. Rowan was also used in rituals: it was believed to help protect the family from illness, preserve youth and attract wealth.
Girls would pick a cluster of rowan berries and count the berries: if the number was even, good luck in love or the quick fulfillment of a wish was expected; if odd, changes were expected.
On this day people tried not to work in the fields and not to start heavy household chores: the earth was resting before the long winter. It was also considered dangerous to speak plans aloud: they could be cursed by unclean forces. Women tried not to let their hair down in public so as not to attract evil energy.
A special prohibition concerned the rowan tree: it was not to be uprooted or branches broken for fun. It was believed that it would be offended and stop protecting the home from illness and ill-intentioned people. Even children were told that the day should be spent quietly, without unnecessary noise and shouting, so that the whole winter would pass peacefully and without quarrels.
