In Zolote, near which the Hero of the Russian Federation from the Republic of Tatarstan, Damir Islamov, was killed, his bust was solemnly unveiled.

      Today a bust of the Hero of Russia from Tatarstan, Damir Islamov, was solemnly unveiled in the Luhansk People’s Republic. It was installed in the town of Zolote, near which tankman Damir Islamov, together with the crew of his T-72 tank, performed a heroic feat at the cost of his own life. Damir Islamov died on March 7, 2023, in the area of the town of Zolote in the Severodonetsk district of the Luhansk People’s Republic. His tank crew, as part of an armored group, was assaulting an enemy area. During the battle the tank was set on fire with a Molotov cocktail. The crew managed to extinguish the fire and rushed back into combat. They encountered five enemy tanks at once. Damir Islamov and his comrades managed to destroy four of them, but the fifth delivered a fatal blow to their tank — the entire crew was killed. By decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, for courage and heroism shown in the line of duty, all members of the crew were posthumously awarded the title Heroes of the Russian Federation.

      Today’s commemorative event in Zolote drew many guests. To pay tribute to their fellow countryman, a native and friend and defender of the Motherland, gathered Vice Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Rinat Sadykov, Deputy Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Protection of the Republic of Tatarstan Rasim Baksikov, head of the Leninogorsk municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan Marat Girfanov, the fallen hero’s sister Dinara Altynova, head of the urban district city of Pervomaisk Sergey Kolyagin, representatives of the regional public organization “Veteran Tankers,” as well as concerned local residents.

      It is worth noting that creating this memorial site took just over two weeks. Three people under the leadership of builder from Tolyatti Andrey Tarzyan worked on arranging the memorial. All the paths, benches and the patriotically decorated entrance group on the memorial grounds speak to the sensitive attitude toward our defenders shown by both the builders themselves and the local residents.

      “Our unity is that people from all corners of our country are united by a common goal. It is faith in Victory, which, of course, will surely come,” noted municipal head Sergey Kolyagin.

      He expressed confidence that this commemorative event will mark the beginning of a great joint friendship and work to immortalize the memory of the defenders of the Motherland.

      Every story of the feats of our defenders penetrates deeply into the souls and hearts of our people, and that is precisely why it is so important to mark the contribution of our boys to the common cause and to do everything possible to bring Victory closer both on the battlefields in the trenches and dugouts, and on the home front.

      “We express our sincere words of gratitude to all those who stood and continue to stand in defense of the interests and security of our Motherland, as well as to those who made efforts to create this memorial,” said Vice Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Rinat Sadykov.

      Damir Islamov’s elder sister Dinara Altynova emotionally and movingly recalls her younger brother. Before her eyes he confidently took his first steps, rejoiced in his first successes and learned with dignity from his mistakes and defeats. It was in the family that the young Damir formed the character of a responsible and determined defender of his family, his native land, his Motherland.

      “In our family we were always proud of his desire to do everything honorably: Damir always took his studies, sports achievements and simply human relations extremely seriously. And when the special military operation began, he had no choice — he knew he had to pay his duty to the Motherland and defend its borders and its people,” Dinara Altynova said with pride.

      The significance of our boys’ contribution to the defense of the Motherland cannot be overestimated. The people’s attitude is visible to the naked eye: at the unveiling of the bust it was hard to hold back tears. A minute of silence and the sound of a metronome in honor of the fallen heroes seemed to pass through the soul of everyone who came to the place of remembrance today. Many knelt at the foot of the memorial in a sign of true and deep gratitude for the deeds and feats that are now immortalized in the memorial in Zolote in the names of tank commander Damir Islamov, gunner Damir Gilemkhanov and driver-mechanic Ivan Tsevun.

      They are worthy representatives of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The strong brotherhood of tankers is confident that thanks to the feats of such guys, peace will come to our land very soon.

      Damir Islamov was born on October 13, 1996, in Leninogorsk. In 2014, after graduating from secondary school, he entered the Kazan Higher Tank Command Red Banner School, after which he went to serve in a military unit in the Rostov region. In Leninogorsk busts in memory of the Hero have been installed at School No. 6 and on the Alley of Heroes. A memorial plaque has been placed on the house where Damir lived.
