      City competitions in fire-rescue sport for schoolchildren under 14 were held in the indoor sports arena of the Main Directorate of the EMERCOM of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan. Eleven top teams competed for the title of Kazan’s strongest team.

      These competitions are held twice a year. To get here, the schoolchildren went through qualifying stages in the districts and advanced to the final. As a result, a hundred of the strongest students reached the decisive starts. Each team consisted of eight children — half boys, half girls. The winner and prize-winners were determined by the results of the team performances.

      The program included two disciplines of fire-applied sport — overcoming an obstacle course and climbing an assault ladder. The schoolchildren competed under a significantly simplified program, unlike the runs of regular athletes. They only had to jump over a small barrier and connect already-deployed fire hoses. Likewise on the ladder climb — the students climbed to the first-floor window of the training tower by a ladder that had already been placed against it.

      “The history of this tournament is very interesting. At one time we went to schools to find promising children for training in our applied sport. But that method was not very effective, and it was decided to hold district and city competitions among schoolchildren. We prepared regulations, explained the rules, physical education teachers supported our initiative, and things took off. Since 2005 these starts have been held regularly,” said Ayrat Sharifzyanov, coach of the Republic of Tatarstan’s team in fire-rescue sport.

      The goal of the competition is to select the best athletes for the Republic of Tatarstan’s team, attract youth to sport, and show that leading a healthy lifestyle is not only beneficial but also interesting.

      To determine the final results it was necessary to hold several final runs for both boys and girls. As a result of a careful tallying of points, the judging panel determined the winner and the prize-winners.

      First place was taken by the team of Lyceum No. 159 named after S.Kh. Zaghidullina; in second place were the students of School No. 129; the podium was rounded out by the boys and girls of School No. 15.

      At the closing ceremony, the participants were congratulated by Petr Ivanov, chairman of the Veterans’ Council of the Main Directorate of the EMERCOM of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan, and representatives of public organizations.
