      Ilnaz Galyaviev, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of nine people at Kazan Gymnasium No. 175 in May 2021, did not appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. According to court documents available to RIA Novosti, the deadline for doing so has expired. The sentence of the Supreme Court of Tatarstan dated April 13, 2023, which provided for life imprisonment for Galyaviev in a special‑regime colony, a fine of 200,000 rubles and compensation for moral damages to the victims in the amount of 22 million rubles, was upheld by the appellate instance in August of the same year. After that, Galyaviev had six months to challenge the sentence by means of cassation, which the court explained to him. However, as confirmed by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, a cassation appeal against the sentence has not been filed to date. Thus, the deadline for filing a cassation appeal has expired. The missed deadline can be reinstated, but only for a valid reason, such as illness.

      Recall that the tragedy occurred on May 11, 2021. Ilnaz Galyaviev entered the building of Kazan Gymnasium No. 175 and opened fire there.

      The proceedings in the case lasted about six months. During that time the court questioned hundreds of victims — the parents of the deceased pupils and the relatives of the deceased teachers. In addition, those who narrowly escaped death during the attack — about 32 people — were questioned. In April 2023 the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan sentenced Galyaviev to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of murdering nine people. In total, more than 600 people are listed as victims.

      At present Ilnaz Galyaviev is serving his sentence in Penal Colony No. 6, popularly known as the "Black Dolphin." It is the largest special‑regime colony in the country; some of Russia’s most dangerous criminals serve long and life sentences there.
