So that such events do not recur, we must know and respect the past. Memory is the best lesson for new generations. Our fellow countrymen endured severe trials with dignity. We are enormously grateful to them," he said.

      Participants in the rally shared bitter memories. Amina Nuretdinova from the village of Irekle said she was two years old when her father was arrested. "We went through hard times, hunger and deprivation, but it was especially painful to bear the stigma of being a 'family of an enemy of the people' and to suffer undeservedly. Today we breathe freely and are grateful to all the organizers who hold such days of remembrance, honoring the fathers and grandfathers who suffered innocently," she says.

      Boris Kokorin recalled his experiences with tears in his eyes. "I was very young when I heard the terrible news: my father, a captain, was arrested right on the ship. It was a horrific blow, because not only my father but also my grandfather were shot as 'enemies of the people.' My mother raised six of us on her own. The word 'hard' doesn't even begin to convey what we went through — there simply are no words. Only after rehabilitation did we begin to live truly happily. Many thanks for that," the veteran shared.

      Every word, every flower laid at the monument that day became a tribute to the innocently afflicted and a reminder of the tragic pages of history.
