How to Save Houseplants During the Heating Season: 5 Essential Rules
With the start of the heating season the air in apartments becomes dry, which creates serious stress for houseplants. Leaves turn yellow, dry out and fall off, and growth stops. How should you care for plants in winter so that they don’t die by spring but retain their beauty and health? We explain the main rules for protecting your home garden from radiators.
Why does heating harm plants?
The main enemies of your green pets in winter are dry air and sharp temperature fluctuations. Radiators dry the air severely, lowering humidity to 20–30%, while most tropical plants need 60–80% for comfort. The cold from the windowsill during airing and the heat from the radiator create unbearable conditions for many species.
5 rules for protecting plants during the heating period
1. Increase the air humidity
Simply watering is not enough. The most effective method is to regularly mist the leaves with room-temperature water that has been left to settle. For plants that require high humidity (for example, orchids, ferns), place a humidifier nearby or a tray with wet expanded clay pebbles.
2. Move pots away from radiators
Keep plants away from direct heat from radiators. If flowers stand on the windowsill, try to shield them from the heat with heavy curtains or a protective screen. This will help avoid overheating and drying out.
3. Avoid drafts and temperature swings
Do not place plants in the path of cold air from the window and hot air from the radiator. When airing the room it’s better to remove pots from the windowsill; this is especially important for sensitive species.
4. Choose the right location
Tolerant of dry air: succulents (aloe, Kalanchoe), cacti, geranium, pelargonium, bay laurel. They will survive but will not bloom under such conditions.
Humidity-demanding: indoor roses, citrus (lemon, feijoa), myrtle, orchids. These must be moved away from radiators and actively humidified.
5. Control watering and light
Water plants only when the top layer of soil has dried out, using water at room temperature. Remember that daylight hours are short in winter — use grow lamps for light-loving species.
Which plants suffer most from radiators?
Delicate and moisture-loving plants suffer especially badly during the heating season:
Indoor roses
Citrus (lemon, feijoa)
Myrtle
Orchids
Ferns
They should be moved to the coolest, brightest place away from radiators.
You can save houseplants. The main thing is to create stable conditions: increase humidity, protect them from direct radiator heat and keep them safe from drafts. These simple but effective measures will help your green favorites get through the heating season without losses.
