The Interior Ministry reported on scammers who obtain data by posing as an accountant in phone calls.

      The Department for the Organization of the Fight against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Russian Interior Ministry warned citizens about a new type of telephone fraud.

      “The perpetrators call on behalf of the municipal formation’s accountant and inform about a payment due or the need to process documents in person at the administration,” the agency’s Telegram channel says.

      They give a specific time, an office number and explain that the documents cannot be processed remotely. At the end of the conversation the fraudsters ask the victim to read out passport details supposedly to issue a temporary pass.

      According to the UBK, passport data by itself does not give perpetrators access to accounts, but creates a psychological effect of trust.

      Most often after this the fraudsters try to extract one-time passwords from SMS or authorization codes, using which they gain access to accounts. Later “representatives of law enforcement agencies” or “security specialists” join the conversation, reporting an alleged data leak, financing of terrorists or other serious violations to increase pressure on the victim.

      The agency emphasized that to protect against such schemes one should verify all invitations and messages through official communication channels, even if they appear completely legitimate.
