      November 6 — Arefa Day. In church a feast was celebrated dedicated to the miraculous Icon of the Mother of God, known among the people as the Joy of All Who Sorrow. This day became special for the faithful, who came to services at the monastery asking the saints to protect their relatives from illnesses and other threats. In the villages agricultural work was finished, and peasants actively prepared for winter. They checked the readiness of their homes, carried out necessary repairs and increased their stocks of berries and mushrooms to meet the cold season with plenty.

      1. Do not try on someone else’s shoes — it could transfer the fate and illnesses of the previous owner.

      2. Do not lend or borrow money — this would foretell financial difficulties for the whole year.

      3. Do not break dishes or mirrors — an accidental break could lead to trouble.

      4. Do not drive dogs out of the yard — a white dog was considered a good omen.

      5. Do not gossip or pick fights — conflicts could turn into prolonged quarrels.

      6. Do not complain about the cold — such words invited severe weather.

      7. Do not accept gifts from people of the opposite sex — this could lead to a love spell or curse.

      8. Do not spend time alone — this would delay marriage.

      This day became a symbol of spiritual support and unity, reminding of the importance of traditions and faith in everyone’s life.
