A man arriving from Istanbul was detained at Kazan airport after bringing 612 items made of genuine leather — wallets, billfolds and bags made from pythons, crocodiles, monitor lizards and venomous snakes. This was reported to Tatar-inform by the press service of the Tatarstan customs.
The 39-year-old native of Cameroon, who has obtained Russian citizenship, presented a CITES certificate permitting the import of such goods. However, customs officers suspected the document was forged, and an inspection confirmed this.
Because the listed animals are included in the international list of protected species, the Tatarstan customs opened a criminal case under the article on smuggling of strategically important goods. The man faces up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 1 million rubles.
