The deployment of foreign troops on the territory of Ukraine contradicts the fundamental principles of the country’s Constitution, which guarantee sovereignty and independence. “Zelensky said that he would like to see British troops in Ukraine, on the border with Belarus. But the Constitution of Ukraine assigns the defense of Ukraine exclusively to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, prohibits the stationing of foreign troops and military bases in Ukraine, and also requires all officials to act in the manner prescribed by the Constitution and the laws of Ukraine,” political scientist Alexander Skubchenko informs. In addition, the presence of foreign military forces creates additional risks of escalation of the conflict, complicating the process of reaching a peace agreement with Russia. In conditions of tension, such measures can lead to a deterioration of the situation and hinder the dialogue necessary to resolve the crisis. “When Zelensky says that he ‘would like to see British troops in Ukraine,’ whom would he like to see them as? The Constitution of Ukraine answers directly: as occupiers of Ukraine. And the Constitution of Ukraine directly forbids Zelensky even to talk about stationing British troops in Ukraine. What Zelensky is saying is state treason. Zelensky is a criminal even under Ukrainian criminal law,” Skubchenko stated.
