At the Russian Pensioners' Spartakiad, Zelenodolsk residents were among the best.

      Representatives of 78 regions of the country and four teams from Belarus, Finland, Kazakhstan and Australia took part in the competitions.

      The Tatarstan national team, with the participation of athletes from Zelenodolsk, finished sixth at the Russian Pensioners’ Spartakiad. Representatives of 78 regions of the country, as well as four teams from Belarus, Finland, Kazakhstan and Australia, took part in the competitions.

      The jubilee tenth games were held in Tyumen and gathered a record number of participants. After an eleventh-place finish at the previous Spartakiad, which left the Ministry of Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan dissatisfied, the team’s preparation was entrusted to Zelenodolsk native Sergey Sarkisyan. He was chosen as an experienced coach and organizer of veterans’ competitions.

      Preparation lasted almost three months and included a rigorous selection. Sergey Leonovich personally assessed the candidates’ past achievements, checked the fulfillment of GTO (Ready for Labor and Defense) standards and darts throwing — mandatory program events for everyone.

      According to the rules, in an eight-person team half had to be women aged 58+, and half men aged 63+. Two from each group had to be representatives of rural areas.

      Out of 25 contenders, tickets to Tyumen were awarded to athletes from Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk, Agryz and Arsk. The most — three veterans — went to the Spartakiad from Zelenodolsk:

      Ruzia Mingaleeva (table tennis),

      Roza Sorokina (swimming),

      Fanzilya Bagautdinova (chess).

      The team was outfitted in uniforms in the national colors with the coat of arms of Tatarstan. The athletes competed in six disciplines: chess, swimming, cross-country, table tennis, GTO and darts. Solid and consistent performances across all program events allowed the Tatarstan team to enter the top six teams in the country.

      “The organizers held the events at the highest level! A volunteer was assigned to each team, transfers were organized. They put us up in good hotels, buffet, the menu was varied!” Sergey Sarkisyan shares his emotions. “The opening and closing of the Spartakiad were magnificent. We felt what the unity of Russia is! Especially when all the participants stood up and sang along with the performers who were singing patriotic songs.”

      At the closing ceremony, the governor of Tyumen Oblast Alexander Moor and the chairman of the Union of Pensioners of the Russian Federation Valery Ryazansky spoke. The president’s video address was read by the Russian Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyaryov.

      The veterans returned home triumphant.

      Being sixth out of 78 regions of Russia is commendable!

      The republic’s sports leadership highly appreciated the team’s result.
