Road trip — with family: 62% of Russians choose to vacation with loved ones.

      These data are contained in the study "Road Trips Across Russia," conducted by the ANO "National Priorities," the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation and the Analytical Center NAFI, which was carried out in September–October 2025.

      Most Russians view road trips as a family form of recreation. Thus, 62% of respondents take such trips with their partner, 57% plan them together with their spouse, 43% bring children, and 33% — other family members. At the same time, men more often prefer solo trips or outings with colleagues and business partners. These data are contained in the study "Road Trips Across Russia," conducted by the ANO "National Priorities," the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation and the Analytical Center NAFI, which was carried out in September–October 2025. Among the main purposes of road trips, almost half of respondents named outdoor recreation (49%) and sightseeing (48%). The top five also included visiting relatives (43%), interest in the route itself (38%) and beach recreation (33%). Among the most popular attractions, natural sites lead: national parks and nature reserves are visited by 64% of car tourists, other natural locations — 55%. Next come exhibition venues (53%) and architectural monuments (51%).

      "Road trips are becoming an increasingly popular form of recreation among Russians, and this is a natural result of systematic work to develop domestic tourism within the framework of the national project 'Tourism and Hospitality.' We see growing demand for quality road infrastructure, affordable services and interesting routes — and we continue to actively invest in these areas to make travel across Russia comfortable, safe and inspiring for every family. More than 110 ready-made routes for road trips are posted on the National Tourism Portal. They cover 62 regions of the country, hundreds of attractions and points of interest, hotels and road infrastructure facilities. Car tourism expands the geography of trips and opens up the opportunity to see the most picturesque corners of Russia that are inaccessible by other means of transport, and the new infrastructure will allow the tourist potential of the regions to be fully revealed," said Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Dmitry Vakhrukov.

      The main advantage of road trips for 51% of respondents is the ability to independently plan the route and schedule. For 20% the choice of a car as transport is due to comfort on the road. Most often Russians go on a trip for 3–5 days — this option is chosen by one in three (32%). However, longer journeys are also popular: 28% of respondents are ready to spend more than a week behind the wheel, and another 21% — exactly one week. Long trips are more typical for men, short ones for women. Almost half of respondents (47%) prefer to be behind the wheel 5–8 hours a day, while short transfers of less than two hours are more often chosen by young car tourists aged 18 to 24.

      "Twenty percent of respondents consider nature to be the factor that most often made road trips the most memorable. The most vivid impressions came from trips to Krasnodar Krai, the Altai republics, Crimea, Dagestan, and Tatarstan. These regions also attract with their culture, history, architecture and vibrant events," said Sofia Malyavina, General Director of ANO "National Priorities."

      Fifty-eight percent of respondents reported that they camped outdoors in tents during their vacations, and many of them also completed hikes on foot. Forty-nine percent traveled by car to fishing spots — mainly men. Young survey participants more often choose active recreation: river rafting (47%), bicycle trips (27%) and horseback riding (23%).

      "Half of respondents have only an approximate route before the trip and choose places to visit freely. This approach is more typical of women. Tourists aged 25 to 34 are the most likely to detail their route. Older people, from 35 to 44, tend to take spontaneous trips without a plan. Of course, car tourism is freedom of choice, but, in any case, preparation for a road trip must be carried out carefully so as not to be disappointed later. A well-thought-out route will save time and diversify the trip," Sofia Malyavina added.

      Respondents named the quality of the road surface (90%), the availability of interesting attractions (89%) and the accessibility of petrol stations (88%) as the key factors affecting satisfaction with a road trip. These elements form the basis of a positive tourist experience and are perceived as basic conditions for a comfortable trip.
