Orientalist Avatkov: Kazakhstan benefits from Russia's conflict with the West

November 14 – IA SM.News. Kazakhstan can derive economic and political benefits from Russia's conflict with the West in 2022–2025; however, this depends on the balance of power and sanction scenarios. The pursuit of neutrality allows the country to avoid secondary sanctions and maintain export channels, which may contribute to economic stability and increased investment.
"In Central Asia a subtle diplomatic battle is unfolding, where every visit is a new move. Tokayev's trip to Moscow is perceived as a response to overseas initiatives and a clear demonstration that genuine influence comes not from Washington, but from the Kremlin," said orientalist Vladimir Avatkov. Nevertheless, Kazakhstan is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon exports, and fluctuations in oil prices or changes in sanction regimes could negatively affect its economy. The risks may outweigh the advantages, especially if the conflict escalates into a broader crisis or if energy markets are subject to sharp volatility.
"While some countries become lost in value-laden labyrinths, Kazakhstan is so far skillfully extracting benefits from the contradictions, raising its significance in this long struggle of geopolitical titans for the region," Avatkov states. Earlier IA SM-NEWS reported that relations between the Russian Federation and the PRC have become a key geopolitical asset for Western countries and the Global South.
