      With the arrival of frosts, residents of Tatarstan are increasingly noticing swans that have stayed for the winter. These majestic birds are indeed late migrants and can remain in the region until the end of November, and sometimes for the entire winter. Swans often deliberately stay on urban lakes because of regular feeding. The birds quickly get used to easily accessible food and do not want to leave these "feeding spots." The head of the district (interdistrict) department for state supervision of the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Bioresources, Linar Gilmutdinov, clarifies the situation:

      "I want to address the public: if a waterbody is not completely frozen over, the birds can quite possibly stay for the winter. There is no need to worry — they have sufficient natural mechanisms to survive the cold. Human assistance is needed only in extreme cases: when there are visible injuries to a wing or leg, or if the feathers are encased in ice. In other situations it is better not to disturb the birds."

      Human help is justified only in cases of visible wounds, ice-covered plumage, or when the bird cannot move.

      If a swan truly needs help, residents of Chistopol should contact the head of the district (interdistrict) department for state supervision of the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Bioresources, Linar Faezovich Gilmutdinov, by phone at +7 927 448-65-04.
