"You win for yourselves": Rubin earned a point against Akhmat at the cost of Daku's injury.

In the 16th-round match of the Russian Premier League (RPL), Rubin defeated Akhmat 1–0

Rubin won the battle between two crisis-hit RPL clubs

By the end of November, Akhmat and Rubin can rightly be considered among the most crisis-ridden teams in the championship. The Grozny side, after a decent start under Stanislav Cherchesov, have again fallen into a slump of unsatisfactory results. Akhmat have not won in the RPL since September 27, and have four defeats in their last four matches. Rubin’s position in the table ahead of the meeting was somewhat better, but broadly the Kazan side still live off the cushion the team built up in the summer. Before the game with Akhmat Rashid Rakhimov’s team also had four matches without a win. Moreover, since the beginning of October Rubin had not been able to score in the championship. So yesterday points were vitally needed by both clubs.

The history of meetings between the Kazan and Grozny sides this season promised not so much quality football as an emotional confrontation. Not long ago Rubin denied Akhmat a place in the Regions Path of the Russian Cup, beating Cherchesov’s squad in a high-scoring match on penalties. Then Stanislav Cherchesov held a press conference full of complaints about the unacceptable behavior of Kazan fans. For Rashid Rakhimov, battles with Akhmat are intrinsically special, given the substantial part of his career the coach spent in Grozny.

As in the first-round match (2–0), Rubin managed to secure victory over Akhmat. The outcome of the meeting was decided by a goal from Mirlind Daku. The Albanian forward had not scored for a long time, and to some extent this goal relieved the emotional tension that had hovered over the striker in recent months.

Daku was injured in the game with Akhmat — will the forward miss Rubin’s Russian Cup tie?

However, Daku was unable to finish the game due to an injury. In the 84th minute, in an episode with Bogosavac, the Albanian twisted his ankle. The forward could not leave the field on his own and was taken away in an electric cart. Medical examinations await the striker tomorrow, but according to Rashid Rakhimov he assesses Daku’s condition as not very good.

Having lost their main attacking force, the Kazan side will find it very difficult in the upcoming Cup match against Arsenal Tula. Recall that already on Tuesday (November 25) Rubin will play away in the Regions Path of the Russian Cup. Arsenal picked up decent form in the First League in October–November and will clearly be motivated to cause an upset and eliminate the RPL club.

However, Rubin still has a few days before that meeting, and perhaps the Kazan doctors will be able to do something to get Daku back in action. Although again the nature of the Albanian’s injury does not inspire much optimism. In the Rubin dressing room the striker sat with a bandaged ankle and ice applied.

Note that without Daku the Kazan side will most likely have to play not only in the Russian Cup but also in the next RPL round against Zenit. Due to an accumulation of yellow cards the forward will not be able to help his team in Saint Petersburg.

"You win not for someone, you win for yourself..."

After a string of failures in recent championship matches, Rubin secured the points that will guarantee the club a mid-table place before the winter break. After the game with Akhmat, Rashid Rakhimov delivered a fairly emotional speech in the dressing room, emphasizing that now the players fight for themselves despite all the surrounding difficulties.

"You win not for someone, you win for yourself. I don’t know a single team in the world that hasn’t had problems. Thank you for your character and dedication," Rashid Rakhimov told the players.

This autumn has indeed been difficult for the Kazan club in every sense. Nevertheless, despite the problems, Rubin continues to be more or less stable in results. The players fight for Rakhimov and grind out points in extremely tough matches. A telling example is defender Konstantin Nizhegorodov. After colliding heads with an Akhmat player at the end of the first half, the Rubin player finished the match wearing a special protective helmet.
