In Kazan, an elderly woman is on trial for lighting a cigarette from the Eternal Flame.

      Today the Supreme Court of Tatarstan opened the trial in the case of 76-year-old Kazan resident Alevtina Panteleeva. She is accused of rehabilitating Nazism, namely – desecration of symbols of Russia’s military glory and insulting the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland. According to the investigation, on August 17 the woman lit a cigarette from the Eternal Flame in Uritsky Park, and the next day she repeated the action. She refused to explain her motives in court, as did her relatives, who declined to comment. Earlier "Tatar-inform" reported that the woman lit a cigarette from the Eternal Flame in Kazan’s Uritsky Park. A video appeared on social networks and attracted the attention of employees of the Investigative Directorate for the Republic of Tatarstan. A probe was launched, and the chair of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, ordered a criminal case to be opened and a report to be presented on the established circumstances, and upon completion of the investigation — on its results. The execution of the order was placed under control in the agency’s central office.
