Choosing medicine: Zainsk high school seniors were introduced to their future profession
On November 29, a career guidance meeting for senior students was held in the conference hall of the Zainsk Central District Hospital.
Students from city schools had a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about admission and training at the leading medical colleges of Tatarstan, as well as to get acquainted with the daily work of doctors and feldshers. The event was attended by the deputy head of the district executive committee, Regina Kamalova, and the head of the education department, Milyausha Valiahmetova. Currently, there are 10 medical colleges operating in the republic, and Zainsk students met with representatives from three of them: Kazan, Almetyevsk and Nizhnekamsk. A highlight of the event was a vivid account of the profession by a young specialist — feldsher Angelina Andreeva from the Savaleevsky feldsher-midwife station, who shared her experience of finding employment and working in a rural area.
Head of the education department Milyausha Valiahmetova explained why students of different ages had gathered in the hall.
“Today we have students from grades 8, 9, 10 and 11, and we invited only interested pupils to the meeting. They already know that they need to pass exams in Russian, mathematics and two elective subjects. Biology and chemistry are also needed. We invited eighth graders so that they already understand what a medical profession is and can make an informed choice,” Milyausha Kamilevna told the students.
“Profession is a way of life”
Chief physician of the Zainsk Central District Hospital, Aidar Fatyhov, greeted the students and emphasized the importance of a conscious choice for the future.
“We invited you here to talk about your possible future if you link it with medicine. You should study not just for a diploma, but so that you can then find a job that is in demand, brings pleasure and offers a good income,” Aidar Fatyhov told the young audience.
The chief physician noted that the medical profession is one of the most respected, demanding and requiring constant development. He stressed that this work is based not only on a deep knowledge of the natural sciences, but also on love for people, the ability to communicate and to empathize.
“People come to us in pain, with their problems, with tragedy. And here we, medical workers, must be at the highest level... The attitude toward all of medicine depends on you, our future colleagues,” he added.
Advice from professionals: start your career in your native region
Representatives of three colleges spoke to the students:
• Dilyara Talgatovna Beshimova, Director of the Almetyevsk Medical College;
• Alexey Vladimirovich Shulaev, Acting Director of the Kazan Medical College;
• Ravil Rashidovich Garipov, Director of the Nizhnekamsk Medical College.
They all agreed that medical work is always in demand, but it is important to be able to make a name for yourself where you were born and raised. In a big city you can get lost, while in your hometown you are more visible.
Alexey Shulaev, who is visiting Zainsk district for the second time, focused in detail on staffing issues.
“The most important thing is that you should start your career ladder in the district, the region, the area where you were born. This is a huge advantage... If graduates understand that they need to stay on their native land for at least 3-5 years, their professional trajectory will be determined afterward,” Shulaev is convinced.
He also warned students and their parents about the importance of making an independent choice. “Being a medical worker is not a profession, it is a way of life. And if a person understands already at the formative stage that they must devote their life to this profession, then that will be good.”
Study time shortened, but requirements higher
Ravil Garipov, director of the Nizhnekamsk Medical College, spoke about changes in the education system. The duration of study in the “Nursing” specialty has been reduced from 3 years 10 months to 2 years 10 months, allowing one to obtain the profession and start working more quickly.
Among the specialties that will be available from 2026 are not only the classic “Nursing” and “Medical Care” (feldshers), but also new ones such as “Preventive Dentistry” and “Medical Massage for People with Disabilities.” The Nizhnekamsk college is the only one in the republic that trains blind and visually impaired students.
“We have 120 state-funded places in total, and there are four applicants per place,” Ravil Rashidovich noted, emphasizing the high level of competition. Graduates who enroll on a state-funded basis sign a four-party agreement and are required to work for three years at the Zainsk Central District Hospital, which guarantees them employment.
Answering a question about competition between colleges, Garipov said: “No, we are just friends. Medicine always has consistently high competition and enrollment.”
The event concluded with a tour of the departments of the Zainsk Central District Hospital, where students were able to see the work of medical staff firsthand. Ninth-grade student of School No. 1 Darya Gubaudullina shared her impressions: the event made her seriously consider choosing a medical direction. Perhaps such meetings help future applicants make a conscious and correct choice, replenishing the ranks of those who save lives every day.
