Folk omens for December 30, 2025: what you can and cannot do

Traditions, prohibitions and wisdom on the day of the Prophet Daniel — what the old calendar advises for wisdom, prophetic dreams and the protection of children.

The last days of the outgoing year in Rus’ were a time for summing up, reflection and appeals to the saints for wisdom and patronage. December 30, dedicated to the great prophetic seer, was considered a day when the boundary between sleep and waking is especially thin, and when fire acquires a purifying power. In our piece — about the omens and customs of this day.

The Orthodox Church on December 30 (December 17 on the Old Style calendar) commemorates the holy Prophet Daniel and the three youths Ananias, Azarias and Misael. The Prophet Daniel, famed for his wisdom and the gift of dream interpretation, and the story of the three youths miraculously saved in the fiery furnace made this day special for the faithful.

Weather signs for December 30: forecast for May and the harvest

Observations of the weather on this day helped predict the coming spring and the summer harvest.

Whatever the weather is on December 30, such will May be — the main omen of the day.

Hoarfrost covering the ground and trees — a thaw within a week.

A blizzard or snowstorm — a hot summer.

A southwest wind — a warm and snowy remainder of winter.

A prolonged snowfall — a bountiful harvest in the coming year.

What one can and should do on December 30

The day was devoted to wisdom, protecting the home with fire and paying attention to prophetic dreams.

Pray for wisdom. People prayed to the Prophet Daniel for the granting of intelligence, quick wit, success in studies and for the correct interpretation of life situations.

Pay attention to dreams and try divination. The night of December 30 was considered a time of prophetic dreams. To see one’s future spouse, girls placed three bay leaves bearing the names of the three youths under their pillow. A good dream should be told to relatives before noon in order for it to come true.

Light a fire for protection. Expecting severe frosts, people heated stoves more than usual, and in some regions young people lit bonfires on heights. This ritual symbolized the victory of light over winter darkness and cold, alluding to the miracle of the youths’ deliverance from the fire.

Provide for prosperity. By tradition, a coin was put into a pocket or purse to attract financial well-being in the new year.

What is categorically forbidden on December 30

The principal prohibitions of the day concerned the protection of the most vulnerable — children — and carefulness about the home.

Kissing sleeping small children (under three years old). It was believed that a kiss could disturb their sleep, frighten the soul, leading to fright, insomnia or illness. A child should be awakened with a gentle word and only then embraced.

Leaving the house cold and untidy. An unheated stove and dirt in the hut, according to beliefs, attracted need, disease and discord into the home. The day demanded special cleanliness and warmth.

Lending and borrowing. Any financial transaction on this day could “tie” a debt knot for the entire next year.

Gossiping, slandering and lying. Falsehood spoken on the day of the prophet—lover of truth was considered a grave sin and promised serious troubles.

Throwing away leftovers of festive food. Food left after the family meal should be fed to animals or birds, so as not to throw away the family’s well-being along with it.

Adhering to these traditions helped our ancestors finish the year by turning to the saint for wisdom, cleansing the home with fire and ensuring protection for their dearest — their children — while looking to the future with hope through prophetic dreams.
