The Main Directorate of Veterinary Medicine of the Republic of Tatarstan warns: A risk-free New Year — how to protect your pet from holiday hazards

New Year's Threat: Protect Your Beloved Pets.

The onset of New Year celebrations brings people joy and delight; however, for our furry companions this period becomes a time of increased danger. Lavish feasts, glittering decorations, and loud music create potential risks to the health and well-being of pets. Let’s look at the most common hazards and ways to protect your animals during the holidays.

      Dangers of the holiday table.

The New Year’s dinner can turn into a real trap for an animal. Ordinary human food can cause serious harm to health and even be fatal.

      Forbidden foods for all animals:

      - Chocolate and sweets: contain theobromine, which can trigger seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and increased excitability.

      - Alcoholic beverages: even minimal amounts lead to severe poisoning.

      - Grapes and dried fruits: can cause acute kidney failure.

      - Garlic and onions: lead to destruction of red blood cells, causing anemia.

      - Fatty, fried, and salty dishes: provoke pancreatitis and digestive disorders.

Explain to guests why they must not feed the pet from the table, especially if the animal is eagerly begging. It’s better to prepare a special menu in advance that is suitable for your particular pet.

Decorations — a source of problems.

New Year decorations also carry many risks:

      - Tinsel and garland: ingestion threatens intestinal blockage and internal organ damage. Do not try to pull an ornament out yourself if you find remnants around the mouth or anal area — go to the veterinarian immediately.

      - Ornaments and light bulbs: sharp edges of broken ornaments can injure paws or enter the body. Make sure the tree is securely anchored if your pets are prone to climbing it.

      - Electrical wiring: animals often are curious about cords, which can result in electric shock. Use protective covers or hide cords out of reach.

      - Candles and sparklers: open flame creates a risk of burns and fires. Always supervise lit candles and sparklers.

      Noise irritants: fear and anxiety.

Deafening party poppers and fireworks become a source of real terror for many animals. Sudden noises can cause:

      - Panic and severe anxiety.

      - Heart attack or stroke in elderly animals.

      - Attempts to escape even in the most even-tempered dogs and cats.

      To reduce stress levels:

      - Prepare a special resting area where the pet will feel calm.

      - Close windows and curtains tightly to reduce external noise.

      - Turn on background music or television to drown out stray sounds.

      - Consult your veterinarian about the possibility of using calming medications.

      - Under no circumstances leave the animal alone during intense explosions/fireworks.

Safety of walks during the holiday.

If your pet is a dog, be careful during walks:

      - Never let the leash go during the holidays.

      - Avoid areas where fireworks are being set off.

      - Walk during the day while the streets are less busy.

      - Make sure the dog wears an ID tag with your contact information.

      Creating a comfortable environment.

The best gift for your pet is ensuring a safe living environment in the run-up to the celebrations. Provide a cozy place where the animal can hide from noise and festivities. Remind guests to follow rules for interacting with animals.

Be vigilant and responsible — your attentive care will ensure a happy and safe New Year celebration for the whole family, including the furry members!
