Celebrating the New Year is not a straightforward issue for Muslims and requires an individual approach that takes into account the specific life context. This was stated in an interview with the Tatar-inform news agency by Rustam Khayrullin, imam of the Gailya mosque in Kazan. According to him, Islam as a religion does not forbid its followers from taking part in public celebrations if they do not contradict fundamental religious principles and norms. For the imam himself, the New Year is, first and foremost, an occasion for internal self-examination and deep reflection on the past year, as well as an opportunity to turn to the Almighty in prayer for blessing and help in the coming year. Khayrullin paid special attention to the issue of the socialization of children from Muslim families. He emphasized the importance of them not feeling deprived in secular society. In the opinion of the religious figure, children should receive gifts not only on Muslim holidays but also on the nationwide New Year in order to feel their full belonging to a multi-confessional community. Regarding the choice of gifts, the imam gave concrete recommendations. For Muslims, offerings should comply with halal principles, and when preparing presents for Christians it is necessary to respectfully take into account their traditions and possible dietary restrictions, avoiding, in particular, alcoholic products and other prohibited items. Khayrullin noted that Muslim parents can allow their children to take part in school matinees and public New Year events, such as New Year tree celebrations. This allows the child not to feel isolated from peers. Earlier, experts in Kazan recorded that Olivier salad has become 18% cheaper.
