The court found Ilshat Gafurov guilty on two counts: incitement to prepare for murder (8 years) and incitement to murder (18 years). The total sentence amounted to 22 years in a strict regime.

The former rector of Kazan Federal University, Ilshat Gafurov, who was previously sentenced to 22 years in prison, attempted to avoid imprisonment by signing a contract to participate in a special military operation. According to the portal "BUSINESS Online," after the verdict was announced, one of the military units submitted a corresponding request to the court. Current legislation allows for the suspension of criminal proceedings upon signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. In the event of receiving a state award, injury, or dismissal due to health reasons, the punishment may be mitigated or terminated. However, the judge, as clarified by the publication's source, refused to even consider this petition. For 63-year-old Gafurov, this was the only real chance to avoid prison, as even with parole, he would have to spend at least 11 years behind bars. However, his age significantly reduces such an opportunity: the Ministry of Defense sets age limits of up to 55 years for soldiers and up to 65 years for officers, and only with a rare military specialty. It should be noted that on May 28, based on the decision of Judge Olga Chistova, Gafurov was sentenced to 22 years in a strict regime for two counts: incitement to prepare for murder and incitement to murder.
