       Ilnaz Galiaviev had the opportunity to file a cassation appeal against the sentence within 6 months from the date he received a copy of the appellate ruling dated August 7, 2023. Ilnaz Galiaviev, who was convicted of committing a mass murder at Gymnasium No. 175 in Kazan in May 2021, did not exercise his right to appeal his life sentence in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. According to court documents, the deadline for filing a cassation appeal has expired, which means the sentence has entered into final force. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing materials from the instance. The Supreme Court of Tatarstan decided on April 13, 2023, to impose a life sentence on Galiaviev, to be served in a high-security colony. In addition, the court ordered a fine of 200,000 rubles and 22 million rubles as compensation for moral damages to the victims. Although the convicted person's defense initially appealed the sentence, in August 2023, the appellate court upheld it. The appellate court clarified the procedure for further appeals to Galiaviev, including the right to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation within six months from the date he received a copy of the appellate ruling. However, as confirmed by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the corresponding appeal was never submitted. Lawyers note that the missed deadline can only be restored in the presence of valid reasons, such as serious illness. It should be noted that the tragedy at the Kazan gymnasium claimed the lives of nine people: seven children and two teachers. Another 24 people were injured. Galiaviev was detained at the crime scene.
