Kazan scientists have developed a new water-soluble compound against cancer.
Specialists from the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences have created a new water-soluble compound with anti-tumor activity. It is based on the natural polysaccharide citrus pectin and cobalt ions. As reported by "Gazeta.Ru" citing the Ministry of Education and Science, the obtained substance effectively suppresses the growth of lung, breast, and cervical cancer cells while exhibiting minimal toxicity to healthy cells. It showed particularly pronounced effects in the fight against lung cancer cells. The mechanism of action of the new compound is based on triggering programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells, which is considered a preferred approach in modern oncology. Unlike many existing drugs that damage healthy tissues, the development by Kazan scientists acts selectively. It is important to note that the compound is not yet a ready-made drug but represents a promising platform for the creation of new medications. The results are already protected by a patent, and the next step will be expanded preclinical studies.
