The specialist explained how to protect the skin in winter.
Winter is a real test for the skin. Frost, wind, and temperature fluctuations disrupt its protective barrier. Does skin actually age from the cold, and how should one take care of it properly? Elena Tukhvatullina, head of the medical prevention department at the Republican Clinical Dermatovenerologic Dispensary of Tatarstan, explained to "Tatar-inform."
Myth about aging: cold or age
"Due to the cold, even normal skin becomes dry and tight, and wrinkles become more noticeable," the doctor explains. "Irritated skin may look older, but that doesn't mean winter ages it. This is a temporary condition that can be managed with proper care."
The main problem in winter is "vascular swings." In the cold, blood vessels constrict, and in warmth, they expand sharply. This weakens capillaries and can provoke couperose and redness. A separate risk group is the lips. They dehydrate quickly, and the habit of licking them in the cold leads to inflammation, cracks, and painful sores.
Exacerbation of chronic diseases
"For people with skin diseases, the cold can trigger exacerbations," warns Elena Tukhvatullina. "Atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea often remind patients of themselves with renewed vigor. Due to increased itching and dryness, patients scratch their skin, risking infection."
Winter care rules: a reminder from the expert
To keep the skin healthy, a special "winter" routine is needed. The doctor provided specific recommendations.
1. Cleansing and drying
• Wash only with warm water.
• Use gentle cleansing products (foams, gels, micellar water) without alkali and alcohol.
• After a shower, do not rub the skin but gently pat it dry with a towel.
2. Protection and nourishment
• Apply a thick protective cream to your face and hands 30 minutes before going outside.
• Look for ceramides, squalane, lecithin, avocado, olive, and almond oils in the ingredients. They restore the barrier.
• Always wear gloves and use lip balm.
3. Special care
• For chronic diseases, use emollients (special moisturizing agents) on slightly damp skin after a shower.
• Turn on a humidifier in your apartment.
• After being outside, do not warm up suddenly in a hot bath—warm up gradually.
Choosing the right clothing
"Irritating wool scarves can damage sensitive skin," notes the specialist. "Prefer soft hypoallergenic fabrics: cashmere or alpaca wool. It's better to avoid metal jewelry (earrings) in the cold—they cool down quickly and can worsen frostbite."
Nutrition and alarming signals
Maintaining skin health is aided by a diet rich in vitamins: eat more vegetables, fruits, nuts, drink herbal teas and clean water.
Seek medical attention urgently if you experience the following in the cold:
• Blisters,
• Severe itching,
• Swelling.
These may be symptoms of cold urticaria—a dangerous immune reaction to the cold that can rarely lead to throat swelling and anaphylactic shock.
