Deadly danger for pregnant women: Rospotrebnadzor spoke about hepatitis E
Viral hepatitis E is an infection that can be almost asymptomatic, but for one category of people, it becomes life-threatening. This concerns pregnant women: in the second half of pregnancy, the disease affects the liver with particular severity. According to specialists from the Rospotrebnadzor Office in Tatarstan, the mortality rate among pregnant women with hepatitis E reaches 10-30%. The outcome for the fetus is often tragic as well: intrauterine death, miscarriage, premature birth. Half of the live-born children die within the first month of life.
How is the virus transmitted? Mainly through water, food, and dirty hands. Sources can include not only sick people but also pigs, wild boars, and deer. Raw or insufficiently cooked meat and seafood are particularly dangerous.
How to protect yourself:
— wash hands before eating and after using the toilet;
— drink only boiled or bottled water;
— thoroughly cook meat;
— do not swallow water while bathing;
— buy products only from verified places.
