Musk: in three years, it will be more profitable to place AI power in space.
The founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, believes that in just two to three years, it will be more profitable to place computing power for artificial intelligence systems in orbit than on Earth. He stated this at an event dedicated to the launch of the Terafab microchip production project. According to the entrepreneur, the cost of operating AI in space will be lower than terrestrial solutions due to constant access to solar energy. "I believe that in just two to three years, sending AI chips into space will be cheaper than installing them on Earth because in space, you don't need many batteries, as it is always sunny," the entrepreneur noted. He also pointed out that the efficiency of solar panels in orbit is about five times higher than on Earth, where losses occur due to light passing through the atmosphere, as well as the change from day to night and seasonal fluctuations. Musk added that expanding energy infrastructure on Earth will become increasingly difficult and expensive over time, while the process in space will be simpler and more economical. In recent interviews, Musk has radically intensified his predictions regarding AI. In a meeting with xAI employees at the end of 2025, he stated that achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be possible as early as 2026, provided the company survives and maintains the pace of development of the Grok models. At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2026, Musk suggested that AI would become smarter than humans this year and surpass the collective intelligence of humanity within the next five years, making energy a key constraint for scaling computations.
