Russian universities changed the rules for admitting applicants in 2026.

      Leading Russian universities have adjusted the admission rules for applicants for the year 2026. The changes are related to updates in education legislation and an analysis of the previous admission campaign, representatives of the universities told RIA Novosti.

      In a number of educational institutions, the list of entrance exams has been revised. For example, at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, physics has become mandatory for admission to engineering specialties. In humanitarian universities, there is now the possibility to consider the Unified State Exam (USE) in history alongside social studies, while applicants will be able to independently choose one of the subjects.

      The procedure for submitting documents has also changed. At MEPhI and RUDN, it was clarified that applications are no longer accepted through the internal electronic systems of the universities – they can be submitted through the "Gosuslugi" portal, as well as in person or by mail.

      At RGSU, they announced the introduction of a so-called "day of silence." "A ban has been introduced on withdrawing consent for enrollment on the day the admission order is issued. This new point is aimed at minimizing cases of manipulating competition results and increasing the transparency of enrollments," the university noted.

      The rules for accounting individual achievements have also been revised. At MIPT, the list of Olympiads has been shortened and the conditions for admission without exams have been tightened. "The key change is the actual exclusion of winners of the Russian School Olympiad from the category of those admitted without exams: the right to admission without exams is now retained only for winners," the institute emphasized.

      At the same time, RGGU has expanded opportunities for applicants: now points can be earned for additional education in the fields of art, physical culture, and sports.

      Among other innovations is the clarification of targeted enrollment. At MPGU, it was explained that targeted places are now assigned to a specific customer. "This change is another step towards increasing the transparency and attractiveness of targeted education," they added at HSE.

      In addition, a number of universities have introduced restrictions on the number of paid places in popular fields, including economics, management, law, and journalism. At Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, it was noted that this will attract applicants to specialties that are a priority for the economy.
