An international exhibition dedicated to the 140th anniversary of Gabdulla Tukay will open in Kazan.

      On April 20, the House of Friendship of the Peoples of the Republic of Tatarstan will host the presentation of an International Exhibition dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of the great Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukay. The exhibition was prepared by the Kazan branch of the Professional Union of Artists of the CIS. The year 2026 has been declared the Year of Unity of Peoples in Russia, and in this context, Kazan occupies a special place as the capital of the Islamic world in the country. This year also marks the anniversary of Tukay – a poet whose work became an important milestone in the development of Tatar literature and brought it to a global level. Despite his short life – he lived only 26 years – Tukay left a significant legacy. His works have been translated by many outstanding poets, including Anna Akhmatova, Arseny Tarkovsky, Semyon Lipkin, and Veronika Tushnova.

      Artists from the Kazan branch of the PSH CIS dedicated a plein air to the poet's anniversary, which started in April 2025. It covered Tatarstan, the Volga region, and Kazan. The result of this work was a series of artworks that will be presented at the exhibition. Each of them is accompanied by lines from Tukay's poetry.

      The exhibition features works dedicated to Kazan by authors Andrei Sutin, Svetlana Timofeeva, Askhat Makraev, and Daniya Kazakova. Viewers will see the painting "Water Woman" by Lada Ayudag inspired by Tukay's works, as well as illustrations for his fairy tales by Marina Abramova. The image of the poet's theatrical muse as a Tatar beauty was presented by artist Dina Lebedeva.

      A special place in the exhibition is occupied by landscapes inspired by the nature celebrated by Tukay. Their authors include Ildar Valiullin (Atninsky District of RT), Tatyana Pashvgina (Cyprus), Irina Krasnova-Volgina, Gulchachak Akhmetsalikhova, Tatyana Gnezdilova, Veronika Muzafarova, Natalia Chervyakova, Elena Lobashova, and Anna Mukhametgalieva. The exhibition is complemented by artistic photographs by Venera Zaripova, taken in the poet's native village – Novy Kurlai.

      Special attention is given to plein air painting across the republic. During the opening, Tatyana Shatalina – the winner of the 2025 plein air – will be honored. She will receive the "Best Artist of the Year" cup from the Kazan branch of the PSH CIS.

      The humorous direction of Tukay's creativity is reflected in the works of the Kazan School of Caricature of the "Podrostok" club under the guidance of Iza Saidashova, who presented a caricature portrait of the poet. The exhibition is also complemented by children's drawings from students of the Children's Art School No. 2 and the art studio "Prostor."
