Zainsk artist Dmitry Krasilnikov uplifted the spirits of soldiers during World War II.
He was not written about in school textbooks, and his name lay dusty in museum storerooms for decades. Dmitry Krasilnikov, a native of the village of Srednie Pinyachi, was friends with Musa Jalil, illustrated the best Soviet magazines, and fought the enemy not with a rifle, but with the sharp pen of a caricaturist.
Who remembers the name of Dmitry Nikolaevich Krasilnikov today? Yet he is our fellow countryman, whose creative biography is a slice of an entire era. Born in 1903 into the Krasilnikov family from the depths of Ufa, he managed to break into the elite of Soviet graphics. Studying at the Moscow VKhUTEIN, collaborating with the legendary publications "Young Guard" and "Projector," and befriending the poet Musa Jalil—Krasilnikov left behind a vast layer of Tatarstan art that was considered lost for many years. Only in 2018 did a personal exhibition at "Khazina" become a true revelation for connoisseurs.
But the most remarkable aspect of Krasilnikov's fate is his front-line heroism. With the onset of the Great Patriotic War, the artist went to the front, was wounded, but did not leave the ranks. After the hospital, he continued to strike the enemy with his pen and brush—in the Belarusian partisan newspaper. Each of his drawings, each caricature of the Nazis served as a weapon: they lifted the spirits of the fighters, mocked the occupiers, and called them to battle. Thus, a native of the Zainsk district made an invisible yet significant contribution to the Great Victory.
After the war, Krasilnikov remained in Minsk, becoming the leading artist of the satirical magazine "Vozhik" and giving Belarusian graphics a new breath. He passed away in 1951 but left behind a rich legacy. Today, his works are carefully preserved in the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, in the Lobachevsky Scientific Library, and, of course, in the family archive—his daughter passes this precious relic to descendants as a reminder: true talent has no expiration date. It is time for us, fellow countrymen, to truly learn about and be proud of Dmitry Krasilnikov.
