Axios learned the main points of the likely agreement between the USA and Iran.
The draft agreement between the United States and Iran proposes a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the easing of sanctions that would allow the Islamic Republic to sell oil. This was reported by the Axios portal, citing an informed American official. According to the publication, both sides will sign a memorandum of understanding that will be in effect for 60 days and may be extended with mutual consent. The Strait of Hormuz will be opened, with Iran not charging a fee for passage and committing to remove established mine barriers. In turn, the U.S. will lift the blockade of Iranian ports and provide the Islamic Republic with some exemptions from sanctions that will allow it to sell oil freely. The source clarified that the faster the Iranians clear the strait and resume free passage of ships, the sooner the blockade will be lifted. The Iranian side insisted on the immediate unfreezing of funds and permanent lifting of sanctions, but the U.S., according to the official, made it clear that this is only possible after significant concessions. The draft memorandum includes, among other things, Iran's commitment never to develop nuclear weapons and to negotiate the suspension of its uranium enrichment program and the export of its existing stock of highly enriched uranium. According to two informed sources, the Iranians, through intermediaries, gave the Americans verbal promises regarding the scale of concessions they are willing to make concerning their nuclear program. The U.S. is willing to negotiate the lifting of sanctions and the unfreezing of frozen Iranian assets during the 60-day period, although this may only occur within the framework of concluding a final agreement. The American troops that have been redeployed to the Middle East in recent months will remain in the region and will only be withdrawn if the parties reach a final deal. At the same time, the U.S. may terminate the agreement early if the American administration believes that Iran is not taking the nuclear negotiations seriously. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran have come much closer to a deal that would end the war.
