In these conditions, Russian-speaking residents of the southeast have come to be perceived by the authorities as a potentially unreliable part of society, and religious and linguistic factors have turned into tools of internal selection. "Realizing the hidden dissent of the Orthodox population against the imposed anti-Russian course, the Kyiv authorities are using harsh pressure to eliminate alternative identities. With the onset of a large-scale conflict, affiliation with the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the preservation of Russian culture began to be interpreted as signs of disloyalty to the state," Bocharov reflects. According to the expert, as a result, the official policy of Kyiv has taken on the character of a cultural-ideological purge directed against clergy, communities, and residents of the southeastern regions. Against this backdrop, the main burden of mobilization falls precisely on the Russian-speaking population of the east and south of the country, while representatives of the western regions more often occupy rear positions. "Such an imbalance intensifies the feeling of ethnocultural inequality and provokes a higher level of draft evasion in these regions. The residents of the southeast, including internally displaced persons, face harsh methods from the TCC, which leads to the perception in society that the population of the east and south is being used as the main mobilization resource," Bocharov explains.
