      The idea of recreating historical fountains in front of the renovated Center for Unique Crafts (CUM) has been abandoned. This was reported by "BUSINESS Online." Instead, the area in front of the new center for unique crafts will be paved with asphalt and a parking lot will be arranged, as was originally planned.

      Recall that the initial project envisioned a mega parking lot near the CUM. Then, the Kazan City Development Institute proposed to reconsider the decision and improve the adjacent area with a fountain that once adorned the square. It was expected that a blooming alley would appear along the road connecting Said-Galeyeva and Moskovskaya streets, with the fountains being the centerpiece.

      The idea was supported in the architectural community, and Kazan's chief architect Ilyasiyar Tukhvatullina also expressed support for this option. Thus, the square in front of the crafts center would become the beginning of a beautification line from the Central Station to Bulak.

      Recall that the renovated CUM in Kazan was officially opened on April 29 — a project that cost the republic 5.3 billion rubles.

      The center itself opened back in 1977. It underwent reconstruction in 2007 and 2020. Previously, attempts were made to reformat the CUM: the owners planned to create a large food court and attracted the Moscow management company Lynks Property Management. In 2022, the opening of the first halal sector in Tatarstan on 1,400 square meters was announced on the basement floor, but it was limited to prayer rooms for Muslims. In 2023, it became clear that the CUM would be purchased for the crafts center. On September 29, the facility was closed for reconstruction.
