      On the way to the title, Fatykhov demonstrated outstanding skill. After eleven rounds of the tournament, he suffered only one defeat, achieving nine victories, and missed one game. The competition was held under the Swiss system with up to two losses, where each round was of great importance. The historic tournament gathered about 150 participants from 17 countries around the world. The contest for the title of the strongest took place in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, from May 29 to June 2.
