A 76-year-old pensioner from Tatarstan lost 1 million rubles after believing a fraudulent fake lawyer.
A pensioner from Tatarstan believed a fraudulent lawyer and lost more than 1 million rubles. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tatarstan, a 76-year-old resident of Chistopol received a call from a "prosecutor's office employee" who informed him that an unknown person, allegedly acting on a power of attorney, was trying to transfer money from his accounts. Since the man had a large sum of money in his accounts, he panicked and informed the caller about it. The fraudster then offered two options: either block the account for three years or withdraw and declare all savings. After that, the pensioner received a call from a woman who introduced herself as a lawyer. She convinced him that she would help him save his money and also advised him to close the account and withdraw all the money. At the same time, the fraudulent lawyer forbade him from telling bank employees the reason for closing the account, justifying it by saying that they might be involved in fraudulent schemes. The pensioner went to the bank, withdrew 1,000,025 rubles, and handed it over to a courier, who then left a receipt and assured him that the money would be returned within a few days. It was only the next day that the man realized he had been deceived and contacted the police.
A criminal case has been initiated. The fraudsters are being sought.
