VTB Expert: What the Stock Market Needs for Healthy Growth
At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026), Dmitry Sredin, head of the client relations department for market sectors at VTB, explained what the Russian stock market needs for healthy growth. According to him, two things are necessary: more truly quality companies on the exchange and a high level of trust from investors. Sredin emphasized that an IPO (initial public offering) should not be viewed as a one-time transaction for selling securities. It is the culmination of a serious internal restructuring of the business: the company must become transparent, establish corporate governance, and develop a long-term growth strategy. Only then will it be understandable and interesting to the market. "The capital market is very sensitive to trust. An unsuccessful IPO, conducted at the wrong time or with an inflated valuation, can significantly reduce investor interest for a long time. Therefore, it is not the number of placements that matters, but their quality. The public market should be replenished with large, understandable, and liquid issuers capable of generating long-term investor interest," noted Dmitry Sredin. He added that approaches to stimulating listings should differ for state-owned and private companies. For state companies, a clear queue of candidates for placement can be formed, and they can be supported at all stages of preparation. Private businesses need different incentives—tax benefits, regulatory relaxations, and other support measures that make the status of a public company advantageous. Today, key players in the Russian market are private investors. Their growing activity will determine the success of future placements. Therefore, Sredin gave a simple but important piece of advice: "Work in Russia and invest in Russia." Separately, the VTB top manager commented on the excitement surrounding artificial intelligence. According to him, it is an important but far from the only area for investment. "A professional investor forms a diversified portfolio and assesses opportunities in various sectors. Artificial intelligence is an important direction, but it is by no means the only one attracting investment capital," he explained. Thus, VTB calls for not chasing the number of placements but focusing on the maturity of issuers and strengthening trust—this, according to the bank, will allow the market to grow steadily and without shocks.
