      The Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr Theodora on June 9, who lived in Alexandria in the 3rd century. During the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian, she refused to renounce her Christian faith, for which she met a martyr's death. In Russia, Theodora was considered a protector and a strict guardian of domestic order. Hence the belief: if a girl or housewife is lazy and does not wash the dishes, Saint Theodora will deprive her of family happiness.

      What not to do on June 9, 2026: main prohibitions

      The list of prohibitions on this day is extraordinarily detailed. Our ancestors believed that anyone who violated them would bring misfortune upon the entire family.

      Do not leave dirty dishes on the table (the strictest prohibition!). It was believed that after sunset, evil spirits dine from unwashed bowls. If the house spirit sees that you do not respect his dwelling, he will be offended, stop protecting the house from thieves and fire, and may even leave. A home without a house spirit was considered defenseless against troubles.

      Do not argue or gossip. Women were forbidden to speak ill of their neighbors. It was believed that evil words spoken on June 9 would return like a boomerang to the gossip and destroy her family.

      Do not wash or dry children's clothes outside. To prevent the child from getting sick and becoming a "victim of the wind," all children's clothing was dried only in the hut or in the oven on June 9.

It was believed that this ritual would preserve the youth of the face until the next summer and protect against pimples and freckles.

      2. Ritual for wealth (with water and a wallet)

      To ensure money flows into the house, place an open wallet with coins on the windowsill, and put a glass of clean water on top of it. In the morning (June 10), the water should be drunk. It was believed that this way the coins would "speak" and attract bills to themselves.

      3. Pies with greens and cabbage

      In the evening, the whole family would sit down to dinner with homemade pastries. The more pies they ate, the richer, according to belief, the harvest in the garden and the profit in trade would be. It was forbidden to leave uneaten pieces on the table — they were given to livestock or crumbled for birds.

      4. Appeasing the house spirit

      Since you did not leave dirty dishes, it is the perfect time to treat the guardian of the house. A spoonful of porridge, a couple of coins, and a piece of sugar were placed behind the stove. It was said: "Master house spirit, accept this treat, do not roam at night, protect the good."
