A 70-year-old man was diagnosed with a bowel neoplasm measuring 10 by 8 centimeters. In such cases, a part of the intestine is usually removed, followed by the placement of a stoma. This approach requires long rehabilitation. Doctors at the Naberezhnye Chelny branch of the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary decided on a complex endoscopic operation. For 6 hours, specialists worked in the submucosal layer of the intestine, which is only a few millimeters thick. "The slightest mistake can lead to perforation of the intestinal wall or serious bleeding. That is why such interventions are considered among the most technically complex in endoscopy," notes the head of the endoscopic department, Ramil Nabiullin. The doctors managed to avoid open surgery and preserve the organ. By the second day, the patient could walk independently and was soon discharged home.
