On additional days off for parents of children with disabilities
Since the beginning of 2026, the Social Insurance Fund branch for the Republic of Tatarstan has paid for more than 7,000 additional days off for parents of children with disabilities. It is worth noting that working parents of children with disabilities are entitled to four additional days off per month. Since the beginning of the year, the branch has allocated over 297 million rubles for the payment of these days off. The paid days off are provided to one of the parents regardless of whether the other parent is employed or not. For example, if the mother is on maternity leave or temporarily unemployed, the working father can take the four entitled days off. To arrange for additional days off, one of the parents (guardian, caretaker) must submit a written application to the employer. If the second parent is employed, the application must include a certificate from the second parent's workplace stating that they have not used or have partially used their additional days off. The days off can be divided between the mother and father or used by one of them. Days off can be taken monthly or accumulated up to 24 days within a calendar year and used all at once. The schedule for providing such days consecutively must be agreed upon with the employer. Accumulated days off must be used within the year; they cannot be carried over to the next period or compensated with money. "Additional paid days off are not provided during the annual paid leave, unpaid leave, or maternity leave for children under three years old. However, the other parent retains the right to four additional paid days off," noted Edward Vafin, the manager of the Social Insurance Fund branch for the Republic of Tatarstan. The employer pays for the days off based on the average earnings of the parent, and the Social Insurance Fund branch for the Republic of Tatarstan reimburses them for the incurred expenses.
