The heat in Europe is breaking temperature records for a quarter of a century.
Photo: Svetlana Mulykina July 11 – IA SM.News. The current abnormal heat in Western Europe has led to an extreme rise in temperatures and the closure of major cultural sites. This scorching period has surpassed in intensity and number of temperature records all the hottest summer waves in Spain and France over the last quarter-century, including the devastating figures of 2003 and 2019. On the Iberian Peninsula, daytime temperatures reach up to 44 degrees, while beyond the Pyrenees, they reach 40 degrees.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 126,000 hectares of land have burned in the European Union, with the main hotspots being Spain, France, and Portugal, where the fury of nature has resulted in human casualties and mass evacuations. The current scale of the disaster at the beginning of July has become unprecedented, significantly exceeding the average figures for similar periods over the last 25 years and outpacing the timelines of the most destructive fire seasons of past decades. To combat the abnormal heat, European authorities are implementing emergency measures, including declaring a red level of danger in France and restricting festive fireworks to prevent fires. In the United Kingdom, the London mayor's office has launched the Heat Ready London strategy aimed at greening the city, modernizing vulnerable housing, and expanding access to drinking water. At the same time, businesses are adapting to climate change: the railway operator Eurostar has changed its contract with Alstom, raising the temperature threshold for adapting new trains from +45°C to +55°C.
