American physicists have implemented a neural network for image recognition based on an ion quantum computer for the first time. Scientists led by Professor Viktor Galitsky from the University of Maryland created a quantum analog of binary multilayer perceptrons. In this network, individual qubits perform the role of neurons, interacting similarly to conventional neural networks. The development has been successfully launched on two platforms: a quantum processor based on ytterbium ions and an IBM "cloud" computer with superconducting qubits. In both cases, 16 qubits were used to process images step by step and recognize digits.
The quantum neural network outperformed classical AI with a similar number of layers. Moreover, the accuracy turned out to be higher than expected due to an inexplicable beneficial influence of noise. Further experiments will help understand this effect.
