Mosquito repellent and financial pyramids: the Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed details of the theft of 61 million at the post office in Yelabuga.

      In Yelabuga, details have emerged regarding the case of embezzlement of over 61 million rubles from the local post office's cash register. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Tatarstan revealed who the suspect was, where the stolen funds went, and what unusual item the woman used in her attempt to commit arson.

      The smoke in the Yelabuga post office began with empty cash-in-transit bags. As investigators from the criminal investigation department found out, the 52-year-old head of the main cash register attempted to set fire to the bags using an insect repellent plate. The smoldering bags were supposed to simulate an emergency situation and a fire in which the missing millions would have burned.

      Recall that, according to the investigation, the suspect embezzled over 61 million rubles from the post office between spring 2022 and July 2026. To pass regular audits from higher management, the woman created fake financial documents, according to which large amounts of cash were supposedly transferred to subordinate branches in Agryz and Mendeleevsk. The stolen money was invested in financial pyramids and used to purchase real estate.

      The scheme fell apart when the head organization reduced the allowed cash storage limit in the post office's cash register from 200 million to 15 million rubles. According to the rules, the cashier was required to transfer any excess amount to the bank account of the higher company. Realizing that there was nothing to cover the resulting gap of tens of millions and that an audit was inevitable, the woman decided to commit arson.

      The postal employee is currently in custody and has fully confessed to her guilt. Investigators have reclassified the case – the investigation is now being conducted under the article for embezzlement or misappropriation in especially large amounts (part 4 of article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Additionally, experts are assessing the damage from the arson, after which the woman may also be charged with intentional property damage (article 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
