      On August 3rd, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Onuphrius of the Caves — a monk of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra who lived in the 12th century. Little information has survived about him, but it is known that he became famous for his silent seclusion and strict piety. This day also commemorates the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel, who had the vision of the "chariot of the Lord." Believers visit churches and pray to the saints for spiritual help and strengthening of faith.

      Traditions of the day

      In folk tradition, August 3rd was called Onuphrius the Silent or the Silent One. In honor of the saint, all work was to be done in complete silence — it was believed that an unnecessary word could bring misfortune. Farmers were too busy to talk: on Onuphrius, they checked granaries and storages for grain, repaired rotten boards, aired and dried rooms, and in some regions, they let cats in to catch mice. The ritual of collecting "silent water" was given special significance. Women would rise before dawn and go to a clean spring, collecting water in complete silence. It was believed that such water had healing powers: it was sprinkled on homes and livestock, and used for washing to enhance beauty and health. This day was also actively dedicated to winter preparations — making compotes and jams from apples and berries.

      This day is associated with many strict prohibitions. One should not chatter idly, gossip, boast, or laugh loudly — idle talk could bring misfortune to the entire household. It is forbidden to quarrel and resolve conflicts, as disputes that begin on August 3rd can escalate into serious scandals, and reconciliation will be extremely difficult. It is advisable not to handle sharp objects unnecessarily, as cuts on this day heal very slowly. One should not wear someone else's clothes — it was believed that this could lead to inheriting someone else's fate and misfortunes. It was also not recommended to let unwanted guests into the house, as uninvited visitors could take away positive energy. On this day, it was customary not to eat raw apples to avoid stomach problems — the fruits were recommended to be consumed only in processed form. Idleness and procrastination were strictly prohibited to avoid financial troubles.

      The weather on the day of Onuphrius the Silent was used to predict what autumn and winter would be like. If there is thunder and rain on this day, it foretells a late flax harvest. Fog lying in the lowlands indicates an upcoming warming. If pigs are noisy, it will be cool in the evening, and if fish are splashing, it will be warm.
